Bed bugs 101

Understanding the bed bug problem

Bed bugs are a common problem few people know much about — and they've made a recurrence as a massive national issue. They're excellent hitchhikers, picked up accidentally almost anywhere, and they live wherever people spend a lot of time: homes, hotels, dorms, apartment buildings, long-term care facilities, schools, and hospitals.

Where are bed bugs found?

Anywhere people rest for long periods: mattresses, box springs, bed frames, couches, and armchairs — but also behind baseboards, inside electrical outlets, in luggage, and within wall cracks. If people linger there, bed bugs can too.

How do bed bugs spread?

By hitchhiking. They travel on luggage, second-hand furniture, bags, and clothing, moving easily between hotel rooms, apartments, and workplaces. It has nothing to do with cleanliness — anyone can pick them up.

Why am I itchy?

Bed bug bites often appear as itchy welts in lines or clusters, typically on skin exposed during sleep. Reactions vary — some people don't react at all, which is one reason infestations can go unnoticed for months.

Can I be infested without seeing any bugs?

Absolutely — this is the most common scenario. Bed bugs are nocturnal, tiny, and expert hiders. Early infestations are nearly impossible to confirm visually, which is exactly where a detection dog's nose is invaluable.

How can I prevent bed bugs entering my home or business?

Inspect luggage after travel, be cautious with second-hand furniture, reduce clutter near sleeping areas — and for businesses, schedule proactive K9 screenings to catch introductions before they become infestations.

Before your K9 unit visit

For K9 safety, please remember

  1. Leave all furniture as it would typically be used — please don't move or stack anything before we arrive.
  2. Inform the handler of any chemical or poison used in the last two weeks around the areas to be inspected.
  3. If any dust or powder bug killers (such as diatomaceous earth) have been used, please ensure they're cleaned up before the K9's arrival.
  4. Ensure all food — including animal food — is up off the floor. On the kitchen counter is fine.
  5. Remove electronic devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets from furniture and put them away.
  6. Ensure all pets are removed or contained: birds in cages, dogs on the balcony or in the yard, cats in carriers or away from the home.

These steps are for the safety of all animals involved — including yours. Thank you!
